Herman Maril was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1908. He received his early training at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts. He was discovered by Duncan Philips in the early 1930s, which led to him being commissioned for painting by the WPA artists program during the Depression. After serving in the Army in World War II he married his wife Esta and returned to Baltimore, where he lived the rest of his life. He taught at the University of Maryland for over 30 years, becoming an Emeritus professor and receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from them. His work is in numerous collections including the Metropolitan in New York, the National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C., and numerous museums in Baltimore. Remembered as an American Regionalist painter famous for landscapes and shore scenes, he created paintings that emphasize clarity and simplicity, and were created with broad, flat, color masses in a style related to Cubism. He passed away suddenly in September 1986 due to pneumonia in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
