Henry Joseph Jost (1888–1969), often referred to simply as Joseph Jost, was a prominent Austrian painter renowned for his masterly still lifes and portraits. Born in Vienna, Jost was largely self-taught, refining his technique by meticulously copying the works of Old Masters before entering the Vienna Academy in 1914 under the tutelage of the genre painter Franz Rumpler. During World War I and II, he served as a war artist, capturing portraits of high-ranking military figures; however, he is most celebrated for his post-war transition to "quiet life" subjects. His body of work is characterized by a sophisticated handling of materiality, particularly in his vibrant depictions of flowers, fruit, and poultry, which often reflect the influence of the Art Nouveau movement of his youth. Today, his paintings are staples in European and American auctions and are held in private and institutional collections across Austria and Germany.
