Artist Biography:
Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator renowned for his vivid depictions of Parisian nightlife in the late 19th century. Born into an aristocratic family in Albi, France, Toulouse-Lautrec suffered from a genetic disorder that stunted the growth of his legs, influencing his perspective and artistic style. He moved to Paris and became a central figure in the bohemian circles of Montmartre, capturing the vibrant and often decadent life of cabarets, theaters, and brothels. His works, characterized by their bold colors, dynamic compositions, and expressive lines, provided a candid and sometimes satirical view of Parisian society. Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous works include posters for the Moulin Rouge and portraits of performers like Jane Avril and Yvette Guilbert. Despite his short life, his innovative approach to art and keen observation of human nature left a lasting impact on the world of art.
