Henri Schouten (1864-1927) Belgian artist, Oil on Board of roosters. Signed lower left. Henry Schouten was a Belgian artist best known for painting farmyard scenes of animals in their environment. In addition to his favorite subject matter, Schouten was also known to paint peasants, hunters, and herdsmen as well, as seen in his canvas Walker with Dogs. Born in 1864 in Indonesia, Schouten went on to study art at the Academy of Brussels from 1876–1881. His works were strongly influenced by Alfred Jacques Verwee, a renowned fellow animal painter. During Schouten’s career, he often signed his paintings with pseudonyms including Jos Klaus, Joseph Klass, Meulat, V. Marinus, and J. Remis. He died in 1927 in Brussels, Belgium Overall size: 23 x 28 1/2 in. Sight size: 11 x 17 in.
