Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 – November 3, 1954) was a pioneering French artist and a leading figure of modern art, best known for his bold use of color and expressive, decorative style. Initially trained in law before turning to painting, Matisse became a central figure in the Fauvist movement, alongside artists like André Derain, emphasizing vivid, non-naturalistic colors and simplified forms. His celebrated works, including The Dance, reflect his interest in harmony, rhythm, and joy. In his later years, after illness limited his mobility, Matisse innovated with cut-paper collages, or “cut-outs,” producing iconic designs that further cemented his legacy as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
