Titled, 'Quandary', original dry brush drawing on backed tracing paper, pencil-signed lower right. Condition: scattered foxing and toning overall. Helen Alton Sawyer was born in Washington, D.C., her father was painter Wells M. Sawyer, with whom she studied as well as in New York City at National Academy of Design, and with painter Charles Hawthorne in Cape Cod. She and her husband, Jerry Farnsworth, founded an art school in 1940 at North Truro, Massachusetts. In 1943, they also founded an art school in Sarasota, Florida where the Ringling Brothers Circus had their headquarters. Both Sawyer and Farnsworth enjoyed robust careers in Sarasota painting circus scenes, portraiture, still life & landscapes. Provenance: Property of a Sarasota lady. Overall Size: 19 1/4 x 16 3/8 in.
