In 1910 a furniture business named Hathaway’s was opened by W. A. Hathaway, a merchant originally from Connecticut, at 51 West 45th Street. They were seen as an affordable furniture maker because their pieces were machine made and not hand crafted, which allowed them to capture the local market for over a decade. Although their pieces were elegant and well-designed, trends came and went and the renewed desire for hand-made furniture along with the beginning of the Great Depression caused a significant downturn in their business. Hathaway himself passed away in 1932, lauded as a pillar of his community, and the business struggled for the next twenty years due to a revolving door of owners. The business closed when the building was sold in 1956 as the entire block was being knocked down to make room for new modern structures. Although little is known about the life of the founder, their furniture abounds in the market, and are uniquely accessible time capsules of early 20th Century tastes.
