Harry Hambro Howe was born in Buckfield, Maine in August 1886. Both his grandfather, H. Howe, and his father, Captain T. Bailey Howe, were artists, and taught him how to paint. T. Bailey Howe was master of the Nantucket whaler Isabella, which gave Harry early inspiration. A prolific artist, he painted landscapes, seascapes, marine paintings, and still lifes, with a special focus on clipper ships and whalers that he regularly saw along the New England coast. He painted during the summer and traveled around the country in the winter, selling his paintings in cardboard tubes. A stroke in 1958 landlocked him at his daughter’s home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he later died in April 1966.
