Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was an Italian-born American artist, sculptor, and designer renowned for his innovative work in metal, sound sculpture, and furniture design. After immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager, he studied at Cass Technical High School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames and later taught metalwork. Bertoia gained fame for his wire furniture designs for Knoll, including the iconic Diamond Chair, but ultimately devoted himself to sculpture, producing over 50 public commissions and pioneering “Sonambient” sound sculptures, which he recorded on eleven albums. His work is displayed worldwide, including at the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn, and the Smithsonian, and he is remembered for merging functional design with experimental, auditory art.
