This whaling book is titled "Harpoons And Other Whalecraft" by Thomas G. Lytle and published by The Old Dartmouth Historical Society Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1984. The book is a first edition (the dates on the title page and copyright page match and there are no other printings listed) limited to only 600 copies, and it explores the equipment used to hunt whales - harpoons, darting guns, swivel guns, shoulder guns, rocket guns, lances, and more, with numerous drawings and illustrations to show how hunting whales was done. The book is bound in beige linen, with a maroon label and gilt lettering on the spine, pale blue endpapers, the half-title and title page, a Contents page, a two-page Foreword, a two-page Preface, 250 pages of text, including the illustrations, a four- page Glossary of whalecraft terms, a two-page Bibliography and four-page Index, and a limitation leaf at the rear which says that only six hundred copies of this book were printed and bound at the Stinehour Press and The Meriden Gravure Company, the type face is Linoterm Sabon, the paper Mohawk Superfine, the binding cloth is Scholco Halflinnen, and the book was designed by Freeman Keith, with decorative drawings by Stephen Harvard, so the book is a rare copy of this unusual topic for whaling and whalers. There are also 332 photos of the items in the whaling collection at the Whale Museum in New Bedford. The book is 8vo. and measures 10 1/4 x 7 3/8 in. wide and is in tip top shape, with just a hint of wear on the right edge of the maroon label on the spine and that's it. The binding is tight and the pages and illustrations are as clean as a whistle, and an attractive book about whalecraft - the tools used to catch whales. We found only two copies listed for sale online, and they start at $125, so a chance to get in on the ground floor. #147 #1532
