James Andrew "Harold" Newton was born in Gifford, Florida, and moved to Tifton, Georgia, at an early age. In 1954 at age 20 he returned to Gifford where he began his painting career. Harold Newton is generally regarded as the most talented of the Highwaymen artists. He honed his skills in the 1950s and 60s under the tutelage of Albert E.
