Harold Napoleon King (1940-2005) American, PastelTitled, 'New Orleans' chalk pastel on paper, titled and signed lower right. Harold "Napoleon" King was born in Miami, Florida, one of 10 children. He was dubbed 'Napoleon' because he was ambitious, working severalpart-time jobs after school. King was a self-taught African American artist creating dramatic images in charcoal and pastel. He set up his easel on the streets of New Orleans in the 1970s, dressed in flamboyant clothes andattracting crowds of expectant portrait customers and gawking tourists. Overall size: 31 x 25 1/2 in. Sight size: 22 1/2 x 17 in.
