Harold E. Larsen was born in Gowen, Michigan in 1934, and studied architecture in college, where he met his wife Fran. Encouraged by her to pursue art full time after seeing his black and white architectural detail drawings, they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1976 to explore geological landscape painting. Primarily working in acrylics and mixed media on canvas or paper, his self-taught style rapidly shifted towards abstraction, using the colors and lights of the desert surroundings as a template to build from. He and his wife opened Hobe Sound Gallery in 1988, which they continue to run along with their daughter Kristen, exhibiting their original paintings and pottery.
