Harold Altman (1924–2003) was a distinguished American painter and printmaker, renowned for his evocative lithographs and etchings that captured the serene beauty of urban parks and rural landscapes. Born in New York City, he honed his craft at esteemed institutions including the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. In 1962, Altman relocated to Lemont, Pennsylvania, where he established his studio in a converted 19th-century church and taught at Penn State's School of Visual Arts until 1976. His works, characterized by meticulous linework and atmospheric depth, depict scenes from Central Park, Parisian gardens, and the Pennsylvania countryside. Altman’s art is housed in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Among his accolades are two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Fulbright-Hayes Senior Research Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant. He passed away in 2003, leaving behind a legacy as one of the 20th century's most influential American printmakers.
