Painting has been lined and shows signs of restoration, area of rock in foreground fluoresces under ultraviolet light. Gustav Wendling was a German history, landscape, and marine painter. At the age of seventeen, he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf and became the master student of Eugen Ducker. In 1886, Wendling went to the United States, to join a group of German painters in Milwaukee who had been commissioned by the American Panorama Company to paint cycloramas and panoramas of the Civil War.
