Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997) Scandinavian, 1950s Art Glass Vase for Strombergshyttan. Elegant Danish modern style, with a layer of grey glass embedded within the clear outside. Signed on the underside. Faded paper label from Strombergshyttan near the bottom edge.

Size: 10 1/2 x 3 in.

Gunnar Nylund (born 1904 in Paris) was a leading Scandinavian ceramicist and designer, the son of Danish artist Fernanda Jacobsen-Nylund and Finland-Swedish sculptor Felix Nylund, and was immersed in artistic practice from an early age. His family moved between Copenhagen and Helsinki during his youth, ultimately returning to Denmark amid the Finnish Civil War, and Nylund pursued studies in art, architecture, and ceramics at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts while training privately under his father. His earliest exhibited works for the Bing & Gröndahl Porcelain Factory in Paris led to full-time employment and a decisive shift away from architecture, and under the mentorship of Jean Gauguin, son of Paul Gauguin, Nylund produced thousands of unique ceramic pieces, gaining international acclaim for pioneering new stoneware shapes, matte glazes, and innovative color palettes. In collaboration with chemist Nathalie Krebs he co-founded Nylund & Krebs and later launched the influential SAXBO line in 1930, a key precursor to Danish Modern design. Joining Sweden’s Rörstrand factory in 1931, he created both monumental sculptural works and refined domestic wares inspired by Song Dynasty ceramics, later shaping the company’s 1940s production. From the mid-1940s he expanded into public commissions and glass design, serving as artistic director at Strömbergshyttan Glassworks from 1955 until his retirement in 1970, and he continued to teach and create in his spare time until his death in 1997, remembered today as a great master of Scandinavian ceramics and design.
