Graciela Rodo Boulanger was born in 1935 in La Paz, Bolivia. Her love of art was influenced by her mother, a concert pianist, and her father, a businessman and art connoisseur, who enrolled her in the School of Fine Arts when she was 11. She studied music and art throughout childhood, giving her first piano recital at age 15, and her first art exhibitions in Vienna and Salzburg at age 18. At the age of 22 she traveled to Buenos Aires, where she met and married a fellow artist, Claude Boulanger. He took her to Paris, where she rapidly achieved international attention for her artwork featuring stylized renderings of children and allegorical surrealist elements. She studied etching and printmaking along with René Carcan under Johnny Friedlaender, and in 1966 she held her first exhibitions in the United States. In 1973 she published an edition of engravings which led to her being selected by UNICEF to design their International Year of the Child poster a few years later. She branched out beyond painting, with two of her tapestries presented in the hall of the United Nations General Assembly and the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, D.C. putting on a retrospective of her oeuvre in 1983. She continues to make new works to this day, with hundreds of pieces held in public, private, and corporate collections around the globe.
