Glenna Finch (nee French) was born in Boulder, Colorado on March 30th, 1927, and moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1945 to join the artist’s colony there. She studied with many of the great artists of the area, particularly under Hilton Leach, Philip Guston, and Syd Solomon, who encouraged her exploration of large-format abstract expressionism. Her husband, Dr. Thomas Vernon Finch, was one of the key benefactors of the city, and together they supported the development of several arts organizations such as the original Selby Library and the Art Institute of New College, as well as founding Planned Parenthood of Southwest Florida. Her work was included in the Sarasota Biennial at the Ringling Museum of Art in 2000, and she passed away on July 3rd, 2001 just as her work was being rediscovered for its part in the heyday of the Suncoast mid-century arts boom.
