Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was a Venetian-born artist, architect, and etcher whose work profoundly shaped the study and appreciation of classical antiquity. The son of a stonemason, he was introduced to Latin literature and Greco-Roman culture by his brother Andrea, and apprenticed under his architect uncle Matteo Lucchesi before moving to Rome in 1740 to work as a draughtsman for Marco Foscarini, the Venetian ambassador to Pope Benedict XIV. He studied etching and engraving under Giuseppe Vasi, developing the skills that would define his career, and by the 1750s he had gained recognition for his precise and imaginative etchings of Roman monuments, earning election to the Society of Antiquaries of London and later joining the Accademia di San Luca. In 1761 he opened his own printing house, and in 1764 was commissioned by Cardinal Rezzonico to restore the church of Santa Maria del Priorato and its adjacent piazza, blending classical forms with creative flourishes. Knighted with the Golden Spur in 1767, Piranesi became a leading figure in early Neoclassicism, influencing architects and artists to preserve and reinterpret ancient structures. Married to Angela Pasquini with three children, he died in Rome after a prolonged illness and was buried in the church he had restored, leaving a lasting legacy as one of Europe’s foremost interpreters of antiquity and a central figure of the Grand Tour.
