Quanyin, also spelled Guanyin or Kuan Yin, is a revered figure in East Asian Buddhism known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion. She is considered the embodiment of mercy, compassion, and kindness. Originally derived from the Indian bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, Quanyin's veneration evolved significantly in Chinese Buddhism, where she became a beloved deity.
In art, Quanyin is often depicted in various forms, sometimes as a serene and gentle woman holding a vase or a willow branch, and other times with multiple arms and heads, symbolizing her ability to reach out and help many beings simultaneously. She is also associated with miraculous interventions and protection, making her a figure of hope and solace for many devotees. Her worship extends beyond Buddhism into Chinese folk religion and even into other East Asian cultures, such as in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
