Georgia Wells Stearns Balch (1888–1981) was a Canadian‑born American painter best known for her evocative landscapes and genre scenes that capture the rural charm of Vermont. Born in Frelighsberg, Quebec, she moved with her family to Johnson, Vermont, as a teenager, and after the early death of her first husband she pursued formal art studies in Kansas City before returning to Vermont to paint full time. Balch established her studio in Johnson, where she welcomed tourists and buyers to view and purchase her oil paintings—many of which were painted en plein air or composed from her own photographs of the local countryside. Over her long career she exhibited widely, including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and was featured in publications such as Who’s Who in American Art, leaving a legacy of work that documents the landscapes and community life of early 20th‑century Vermont.
