Georges Van der Straeten (1856–1928) Belgium, Bronze Bust of a Noblewoman. Cast bronze bust of a woman in fine ruffled dress. Incised signature on back, impressed stamp for the Parisian Society of Bronzes on shoulder.

Size: 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 x 12 1/2 in.

Georges Van der Straeten (1856–1928) was a Belgian-born sculptor celebrated for his elegant Art Nouveau busts and figures. Initially trained in law, he abandoned that path in 1882 to study sculpture under Jef Lambeaux and Gustave Kasteleyn. In 1883, he moved to Paris, where he exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1885 to 1912 and formed friendships with artists like Jan van Beers. His refined bronze and chryselephantine works—often portraying graceful, idealized Parisian women—were inspired by Watteau and echoed the style of Emmanuel Villanis. Van der Straeten earned a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition and was made a chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1903. His beautifully crafted figures were widely cast by prestigious foundries including the Société des Bronzes de Paris, Pinedo, and Goldscheider. He returned to Ghent later in life, where he died in 1928 (some sources cite 1941), leaving behind a legacy as a master of Belle Époque sculpture
