Georges Rouault (1871–1958) was a French painter, printmaker, and draughtsman associated with Fauvism and later Expressionism, best known for his intensely spiritual and emotionally charged images. Trained as a stained-glass artist, he developed a distinctive style characterized by heavy black outlines, jewel-like colors, and dramatic contrasts, often recalling the appearance of medieval glass. His subjects included clowns, prostitutes, judges, and religious figures, through which he explored themes of human suffering, hypocrisy, compassion, and redemption. A devout Catholic, Rouault increasingly turned toward Christian imagery, producing powerful works such as Miserere, a major series of etchings addressing war, misery, and spiritual anguish. His work occupies a distinctive place in modern art for combining the expressive intensity of the avant-garde with a deeply religious moral vision.
