Georges Chavignaud (1865–1944) was a French-born Canadian painter and educator known for his atmospheric landscapes, marine scenes, village views, portraits, and genre paintings. Born in Lanvéoc, Brittany, France, he moved to Toronto in 1884, where he worked as an art director before pursuing further studies in Europe, including at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and through painting studies in Antwerp and Paris. Influenced by French Impressionism, as well as the Barbizon tradition, Chavignaud developed a style noted for poetic landscapes, expressive skies, and sensitive handling of light in watercolor and oil. He served as principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax, was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, and exhibited widely in Canada. His works are held in major Canadian collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, and he is recognized as an important figure in the development of early Canadian landscape painting.
