George Nelson (1908-1986) was born in Hartford, Connecticut and attended Yale University, and became an influential American industrial designer, architect, and writer who is regarded as a founding figure of Mid Century Modernism. As the long-serving director of design at Herman Miller, he recruited visionary creators like Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, and Isamu Noguchi. Nelson designed a defining array of 20th Century furniture icons, including the Marshmallow Sofa, the Coconut Chair, and the Platform Bench. Beyond seating, he revolutionized interior space management by pioneering the modular Storagewall concept, developing the office cubicle in the form of the Action Office line, and creating a celebrated series of playful, sculptural wall clocks under his own design studio, George Nelson Associates. His extensive writings and essays established him as one of the design world’s most articulate critics and theorists, and his final years were spent as a scholar in residence at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. Since his death, Nelson has garnered some criticism for allegedly accepting credit for designs that were the work of others employed at his studios, but he is still remembered as a master of functional innovation whose holistic vision fundamentally shaped the aesthetic of the modern home and office.
