George Laurence Nelson was an American painter best known for his portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, celebrated for combining strong draftsmanship with a vibrant, Impressionist-influenced use of color. Born in New Rochelle, New York, he studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York, as well as the Académie Julian in Paris, before building a distinguished career as both an artist and teacher. Nelson taught at the National Academy of Design and Cooper Union, exhibited widely across the United States and Europe, and earned recognition as a member of the National Academy of Design. He spent much of his life in Kent, Connecticut, where his studio became an important part of the local art community. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s print collection and other major institutions, reflecting his lasting contribution to 20th-century American art.
