George F. DeCambra Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 27th, 1935, and attended Rutgers Agricultural School before serving as a machinist in the US Navy. It was there that he first became interested in wood carving, a passion which he pursued all his life while working other jobs to make ends meet. Upon returning to the United States he established Northern Valley Motors in Closter, New Jersey, and after his retirement in 1985 he worked as a mechanic, volunteer fireman, EMT, and small plane flight instructor. He and his wife moved to Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1996, where he worked as a general contractor building houses before focusing on wood carving and turning fully, dividing his remaining years between the Northeast and a home in Naples, Florida, where he died on October 13th, 2023. His wooden furniture, vases, and other goods are now highly sought for their durability and high quality, with many commissioned pieces in public and private collections along the East Coast.
