Gale Fulton Ross (Born 1947) was born in Medford, Massachusetts, the oldest of nine children in an affluent African-American family. She studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, exploring diverse media including sculpture, and continued at the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco, focusing on Fine Arts and art history. She trained privately under artists such as Melvin Johnson, Cleveland Bellow, and Pierre Parsus while in residence at the La Napoule Art Foundation in France. Initially trained as a curator, Ross traveled extensively across Africa, Europe, and China, studying and producing work influenced by global artistic traditions. In 1984 she held an exhibition at the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, and in 1993 received an award to study and work in China. Known for her eclectic portraiture, she created likenesses of figures including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Justice Thurgood Marshall, Governor Michael Dukakis, and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her work blends figurative and abstract styles, often depicting African American women, and draws on classical influences like Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Rembrandt, as well as African-American masters such as Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, and Beauford Delaney. Ross now resides in Sarasota, Florida, where she continues to create art and supports emerging artists through the Fulton-Ross Fund for Visual Artists of Sarasota County.
