Gail Dempsey (Born 1938) American, Landscape Acrylic on Canvas. Depicts a tranquil lake in the midst of the tropical Florida wilderness on a bright but cloudy day. Signed bottom left.

Gail Dempsey was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1938 to Italian immigrants who had fled the chaos of Europe. The family moved to Nokomis, Florida in 1945 so her father could study art at Ringling College on the GI Bill after serving in World War II, and this early introduction to art inspired her all her life. Mostly interested in watercolors, oils, acrylics, and pastels, she particularly focused on landscapes, capturing the beautiful natural splendor all around her in what was then mostly untouched Everglades. Although she put her artistic aspirations on hold to care for her family and focus on steady jobs, she began to paint in earnest in her retirement, and in 2010 she opened Melange Art Gallery in nearby Venice to showcase her work and that of other local artists. The facility closed in 2024 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but she continues to paint to this day.
