George Howell Gay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2nd, 1858. After moving to Chicago he studied under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins, and became well known for his watercolor landscapes, seascapes and paintings of rivers and ships, mostly along the shores of New England. Some of his works display a tonalist aesthetic, and he worked mainly in watercolor. He is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890 and at the Boston Art Club from 1890-1900. Shortly before his death in 1931, Gay moved to Bronxville, New York.
