Freude (20th Century) American, was born in the Sacramento Valley, California, and lived there most of their life. In their youth they explored pastels, developing their highly detailed, richly colored style. They worked first in display and advertising, beginning their career as an artist drawing pet portraits for a Marysville gallery. They worked in oils and made serigraphs and intaglio prints, before abandoning all other forms for their first love, pastels. Later in life they had solo shows, won awards at local arts festivals, and was profiled on Sacramento television, with their drawings printed on post cards. In retirement they live at their home studio just north of Fort Bragg, where they are surrounded by family and forests, painting the ocean, still lifes, and her favorite subject of all time, cats.
