An electric guitar is a guitar that requires external amplification in order to be heard at typical performance volumes, unlike a standard acoustic guitar. It uses one or more pickups to convert the vibration of its strings into electrical signals, which ultimately are reproduced as sound by loudspeakers. Invented in 1932, the electric guitar was first adopted by jazz musicians, eventually becoming one of the most important instruments in popular music by the late 1950s. The Fretlight Guitar Company was founded in San Jose, California in 1988, when inventor Rusty Shaffer created an electric guitar with switches on it to instantly generate specific chords and scales. By the late 2010s they were known for their innovative light-up frets to help students and beginners locate chords quickly and easily, and pioneered bluetooth connectivity and integrated software learning programs starting with their 500 series.
