Centerpiece set of one mantel clock and two matching vases. Mantel clock with variegated marble, bronze accents and machine work with mercury pendulum, with roaring bronze lion on top. Vases with marble body and bronze accents. C. 1870s France. Condition: Very good, no imperfections. Clock in working condition.

After the fall of Napoleon III in 1870 the Third Republic of France was created, which lasted until the Nazi occupation of 1940. The Belle Epoque style that developed in the immediate wake of this tumultuous period was a direct response to the decline of France’s world standing, but towards the end of Napoleon III’s reign the Empire style had a brief revival as Rococo imagery became popular again. The eclectic and rapid shifts in fashion and themes in France at this time generated a broad spectrum of art and architecture, ranging from highly austere and Romantic to opulent reproductions of Louis XIV decadence. This particular piece, a marble and bronze library clock with accompanying ornamental cassolets, is a stunning example of the latter influence.
