Frederick William Wetzel was born in Kutztown, Pennsylvania in 1943. As a youth he developed a love of animals, and ornithology in particular, as well as an appreciation for wildlife art, starting to paint his own works when he was 14. While studying at Kutztown University his painting became more than a hobby, helping him to make money as a side career. After college he went to work at the Hawk Mountain Conservatory, before leaving in 1971 to teach at a private school in Florida. By 1981 he was painting so much that he finally decided to give up teaching and focus on it full time, and today he still lives in northeast Florida where he offers seminars in outdoor painting, and continues to make new works, with an estimated 3,000 works completed over his lifetime. He frequently returns to his home state to teach as well, where his pieces can be seen at the William Penn Memorial Museum in Harrisburg, the Everhart Museum in Scranton, and the Reading Museum, in addition to numerous galleries and museums throughout Florida.
