Tranquil beach scene with figures, oil on canvas, signed lower right. A true American Impressionist, Frederick McDuff was largely self-taught. His subjects typically were of beach scenes, parks, and landscapes. McDuff's works are constructed along planes, beginning with large expanses of sky in the beach scenes, a middle ground populated with gracious, serene figures, and a foreground that seems to place the viewer at the edge of the composition. McDuff's subjects are bathed in a soft light that simulates the warmth of the sun and the touch of a gentle breeze.
