Frederick Clark Lyman Jr. was born on March 7th, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After graduating as valedictorian of his high school he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the European Theatre during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war he attended Yale University on the GI Bill where he studied art, focused first on watercolors and later on oil. After marrying his wife Charsie they moved to Washington, New Jersey, where he set up a home studio and began to explore more and more postmodernist types of art. A working artist all his life, he taught himself to build musical instruments to help his stepson out during high school, and his hand-crafted basses were highly sought by local jazz musicians. In the early 1990s he began wintering in Boynton Beach, Florida for health reasons, where he frequently showcased his works in local galleries. He passed away at his home there on July 20th, 2011, and was buried in his family plot in Minneapolis, with his bright and intriguing works still sought by collectors throughout New England, the Midwest, and the Southeast.
