Fred Garbotz (B. 1939) was born in Rhode Island and grew up on the East Coast. After completing his B.A. in Business Administration at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, Garbotz continued his education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, majoring in both art and architecture. After graduating in the mid-1970s he began studying under several Midwestern sculptors while working as a computer consultant, developing a unique and playful Postmodernist style. Upon moving to Cocoa, Florida in the 1990s he opened Rockledge Design Studios to create art full-time. Since then he has worked primarily in metal sculpture, first with copper and brass and later in steel and aluminum, currently combining all those metals plus glass for accents. Today the company functions primarily in crafting custom metal fabrications for new homes, and Garbotz’s design aesthetic focuses on pieces that marry form and function, with his statues, sculptures, and furniture imbued with a unique personality all his own.
