Famous as the youngest original member of the transcendentalist art movement known as the Group of Seven, he initially worked in oils before becoming a master of watercolors and co-founding the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, serving as their president from 1932-34. Carmichael was also a versatile craftsman who experimented with wood engraving, book design, and metalwork before becoming a teacher at the Ontario College of Art. Beyond his professional life, he was a talented amateur musician and remained an active figure in the art community until his death from a sudden heart attack on October 24th, 1945, with many posthumous awards and exhibitions of his work since.
