Frank (Franz) Hans Johnston was active in Winnipeg and Toronto, Canada. Frank Johnston was briefly a member of the Group of Seven, led by Lawren Harris, which held to doctrines of painting that emphasized commitment to national subjects and spiritual interpretation of these subjects, frequently landscapes.
Because of the more decorative tendencies of Johnston's work and his desire for creative independence, he fell away from the Group of Seven.
