Large pottery sculpture of elongated face, flanked by gilt hair or headdress. Upper forehead accented with red glass stone. Signed and dated on reverse, Colson '85.

Artist Biography: Frank Colson, renowned for his sculptures in clay, bronze, and mixed media, created signature pieces like mask-like wall art and metamorphic animals. He studied under Paul Soldner and Richard Petterson at Scripps College and was inspired by his travels to 67 countries, which influenced his "neo-primitive" style. Born in Paris to a Latvian ballet dancer and an American opera singer, Colson moved to the U.S. at age four and was raised in southern California. His career began at Florida State University's television station, where he honed his pottery skills before opening a pottery school in Sarasota in 1963. Colson was a vital figure in Sarasota's arts community, serving on several boards, including the Museum of Asian Art and the Public Art Advisory Board, and was a juror for the Ringling Museum of Art's 20th craft festival.
