Francoise Gilot was a French painter who was the mistress and muse of Pablo Picasso. She met Picasso when she was 21 and he was 61, and despite the age difference, she moved in with him in 1946 and they never married, and she had two children with him. They only stayed together for ten years, and in 1964, she wrote Life With Picasso, a book which Picasso tried to prevent her from publishing. She was influenced by Picasso’s work as a Cubist painter, but developed her own style of art; she avoided the sharp edges and angles that Picasso embraced and used organic figures instead. She was art director of the Virginia Woolf Quarterly, and in the 1980’s and 90’s she designed costumes, sets, and masks for productions at the Guggenheim in New York City. She also married Jonas Salk, the American doctor who pioneered the vaccine for treating polio. The poster is entitled “Springtime” and is based on an oil-on-canvas she did in 1978. The poster here was to promote an art exhibit in Palm Springs and at the Oklahoma Art Center in 1982. The overall size is 35 1/8 x 21 7/8 in. wide and the sight size is 34 1/2 x 21 1/8 in. wide.
