Franco Bettonica (1927-1999) was an influential Italian architect and designer celebrated for his innovative contributions to modern furniture and lighting design. Born in Milan, he studied architecture and began designing while still a student, developing a versatile career that encompassed building construction, interior furnishings, and industrial products. In 1969 Bettonica co-founded the famed Italian design brand Cini & Nils alongside Mario Melocchi to market their inventive creations directly to consumers. His early work focused on functional tabletop accessories, revolving magazine racks, and bar sets, earning prestige when multiple designs were acquired into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He revolutionized modern desktop lighting in 1972 with the creation of the iconic “Cuboluce,” a compact cube lamp that automatically turns on when its reflective lid is lifted. Serving as creative director for Cini & Nils right up until his passing in 1999, Bettonica left an enduring legacy rooted in geometric minimalism, functional ingenuity, and technical precision.
