Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter whose work bridged the Old Masters and modern art. Born in Fuendetodos, he trained under José Luzán and Anton Raphael Mengs before traveling to Rome to refine his style. He married Josefa Bayeu in 1773, though only one of their seven children survived. After a severe illness in 1793 left him deaf, his art grew darker and more introspective. Goya gained fame through Rococo tapestries, dramatic etchings, and his role as official court painter, eventually becoming Director of the Royal Academy and Prime Court Painter. Witnessing the Peninsular War, personal loss, and social upheaval, his later works—including the Disasters of War, fantastical etchings, and the Black Paintings—reflect trauma, insanity, and political critique. He retired to Bordeaux in 1824, completing La Tauromaquia, and died in 1828, leaving a profound and lasting influence on the art world.
