Francis William Vreeland (1879-1954), often signing his work “F. van Vreeland,” was an American painter and muralist known for his lush, impressionistic treatment of landscapes, portraits, and decorative compositions. Born in Seward, Nebraska, he studied art in Paris at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi, absorbing the influence of European colorism before returning to the United States. Vreeland settled in Los Angeles in the early 20th century, where he became an influential figure in the local art community—serving as president of the California Art Club and contributing to the city’s growing cultural identity through murals, easel paintings, and design work. His style blended classical draftsmanship with the airy palette and brushwork of French Impressionism, earning him a reputation as both a refined technician and an advocate for the arts in Southern California.
