Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th president of the United States, serving from 1953 to 1961 after a distinguished career as a five-star General of the Army. Born in Denison, Texas on October 14th, 1890, he served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War II, where he planned and supervised the monumental invasions of North Africa and Normandy. In his presidency, he successfully negotiated the 1953 armistice that ended active fighting in the Korean War and implemented the “New Look” policy of nuclear deterrence. Domestic achievements under his administration included the creation of the Interstate Highway System, the establishment of NASA, and the expansion of Social Security, all of which contributed to him being considered one of the most important Presidents in history. Eisenhower also took significant steps in civil rights by signing the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and deploying federal troops to integrate schools in Little Rock, Arkansas, with his 1961 farewell address famously warning the nation against the rising influence of the “military-industrial complex.” He died in Washington, D.C. on March 28th, 1969.
