Princess Juliana International Airport (also known as Saint Maarten and Saint Martin Airport) is the main airport on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, located on the Dutch side close to the shore of Simpson Bay lagoon. It is named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who landed there while she was heir presumptive in 1944, the year after the airport opened. The airport has very low-altitude flyover landing approaches because one end of its runway is extremely close to the shore and Maho Beach. This has resulted in numerous iconic photographs of planes perilously close to the traffic rushing below, and made it one of the world’s favorite places among planespotters despite the dangers from jet blasts and the overwhelming roar of the engines. Over a dozen people have died since the airport first opened as a US military airstrip during World War II due to the difficulty landing there, and The History Channel ranked it as the 4th most dangerous airport in the world as of 2010.
