Ford Ruthling (1933–2015) was an American painter, printmaker, and multimedia artist closely associated with the artistic culture of Santa Fe and the American Southwest. Known for his imaginative and highly decorative style, Ruthling worked in a wide range of media—including oil, watercolor, tin, wood, clay, and paper—often drawing inspiration from regional traditions, nature, and the visual heritage of Native American and Spanish colonial art. His paintings of Pueblo pottery became widely recognized and were featured on a series of U.S. postage stamps in 1977. Ruthling also developed distinctive embossed monotypes made from stamped and painted tin, blending folk art influences with contemporary imagery. Over his long career, his work was exhibited nationally and collected by institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, and he was honored as a “Santa Fe Living Treasure” for his lasting contributions to the region’s artistic community.
