Adriaen van der Werff (1659–1722) was a highly esteemed Dutch painter known for his refined, elegant style that blended Dutch realism with classical idealism. Born in Kralingen, near Rotterdam, he trained under Eglon van der Neer and quickly gained a reputation for his polished technique, delicate handling of flesh tones, and graceful compositions. Van der Werff specialized in mythological, biblical, and allegorical scenes, often featuring idealized figures in luminous, theatrical settings. His meticulous brushwork and smooth, enamel-like surfaces made his work especially appealing to elite patrons, including Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, who appointed him court painter and granted him noble status. Though his popularity declined with the rise of Romanticism, van der Werff was one of the most admired artists of his day, influencing the development of late Baroque and early Rococo painting in northern Europe.
