Floyd Gahman was born in 1894 in Elida, Ohio and raised on a farm in Allen, Indiana, inspired early on to explore art to capture the beauty of the land his family worked. He studied at Valparaiso College and obtained his Masters in Fine Arts at Columbia University, studying further with Hobart Nichols and Henry Varnum Poor. He enlisted during World War I and served as a combat pilot, and again served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Throughout these periods he continued to paint landscapes in oils, focusing primarily on New England and mid-Atlantic views, and upon his discharge from the military he served as an assistant professor of fine arts at Pennsylvania State University Center, Ogontz. He was named a National Academician in 1969 and had pieces acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Salmagundi Club, and Pennsylvania State University, and spent his final years painting park views in New York City, where he died in 1979.
