Florence Putterman (1927-2021) was an American post-modern artist who created richly imaginative abstract and quasi-figurative compositions over more than half a century. Inspired by prehistoric and petroglyphic imagery, she developed visual languages populated by playful animals, serpents, and levitating figures in riotously patterned environments. Her works are highly tactile and earthy, often incorporating mixed media like sand, crushed shells, and handmade paper with bold pigments to produce dynamic surfaces. Putterman earned her MFA from Pennsylvania State University, received grants from the NEA, and exhibited widely across the U.S.
